Circular Economy

PLS was pleased to have participated in yet another informative workshop with the Net Zero Innovation Cohort at the University of Warwick, Coventry, organized by the Net Zero Innovation Network and the WMG SME team.

The workshop explored the concept of the circular economy and material efficiency. The three core principles discussed were the elimination of waste and pollution, the circulation of products and materials at their highest value, and the regeneration of nature. The circular economy principles – Rethink, Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Refurbish, Recover, Recycle – were at the forefront of the discussions.

At PLS, we are proud to be actively contributing to the circular economy. Here are some key initiatives we have undertaken:

1. Lean Workshop Principles: Implementation of flow-tube racking and oriented strand boards board tables for efficient operations.

2. Design for Repair: Developing bolt-together products that can be easily repaired or replaced, minimising waste.

3. Eco-Friendly Materials: Transitioning from thermo plastics to bio-plastics for a more sustainable product line.

4. Local Sourcing: 80% of our suppliers are within the local area, reducing transportation-related emissions.

5. Packaging Innovation: Creating bespoke infinitely recycled Kan-Ban boxes and frames for large components to reduce packaging waste.

6. Environmentally Friendly Paint: Utilising water-based paint without toxic chemicals in our processes.

7. Recyclability: Our lifts are 98% easily recyclable through traditional steel and alloy processes.

8. Energy: Exploring renewable energy sources to heat the factory and installing EV charging stations for staff.

We are already ticking many boxes in our journey towards a circular economy and material efficiency following the circular economy principles. Our commitment goes beyond compliance โ€“ it’s about fostering a sustainable culture within our organisation. By sharing our progress, we aim to inspire and involve our staff, customers, and end-users in this.

The workshop provided valuable insights into the circular economy and the importance of reducing waste across all business aspects. It emphasised the need for a cultural shift within organisations and highlighted the seven wastes that need attention.

At PLS, we believe that being a leader in sustainability requires continuous effort and a collective commitment. We’re pleased to be at the forefront of positive change and encourage others work towards a circular and sustainable future.
